    The Best Smartphones of 2012

  • Amanpreet Singh
  • Lots of excellent smartphones have been released this year, so it can be difficult to keep track of the best of the best. Choosing a particular device for yourself at upgrade time, can be especially daunting because there are so many choices out there.
Luckily we’re here to help. We’re going to cover some of the best smartphones that have been released this year and help you decide which phone is right for you.

Samsung Galaxy SIII – The Samsung Galaxy SIII is an incredibly beautiful smartphone running the Android OS. Currently the Galaxy SIII is running Android 4.0 ICS, but it is likely Samsung owners will see an OTA update for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The Galaxy SIII is available in a marble white, and pebble blue, finish for $626 without a contract.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, combined with 2GB of installed RAM and a 16GB internal storage capacity. The SIII also includes a 4.8″ HD AMOLED display with a maximum supported resolution of 1280×720 pixels. Needless to say, the screen is large, very vivid, and exceptionally beautiful.
You can’t go wrong here with tons of advanced features included like the wireless S-beam file transfer functionality, Samsung video pop-up play (to watch videos and perform other tasks simultaneously), and the S-Voice functionality which is a Siri-like voice search feature.
For multimedia, the Galaxy SIII offers an 8.0 MP rear facing camera with full 1080p video recording support and a 1.9MP front facing camera for webcam self-shot and video chat support.

Samsung Galaxy Beam - MWC 2012Samsung Galaxy Beam – The Samsung Galaxy Beam is a rather attractive device with one prominent feature, it includes a built-in projector.
The Galaxy Beam includes a 15 lumen nHD projector that can display an image up to 50 inches at a resolution of 640×360 under low light settings. The Beam is perfect for those brief moments where you want to present media and content from your phone screen to a large group, and you don’t need the added stress of dealing with other devices.
The Galaxy Beam is powered by a dual-core 1 GHz processor combined with 768 MB of installed RAM and is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. In addition, the Beam includes 16GB of internal storage with a microSD slot that supports up to 32GB of additional storage.
Galaxy Beam media features include a 5MP rear facing camera with flash, a 1.3MP front facing camera, 720p video playback support, an accelerometer, gyroscope and digital compass.
The Galaxy Beam also includes the standard smartphone features like an integrated Wi-Fi 802.11 radio, Bluetooth 3.0 functionality, USB 2.0 and microUSB support and a 3.5mm headphone jack.        The Samsung Galaxy Beam is available in the UK.
Nokia Lumia 900 – The Nokia Lumia 900 is running the highly anticipated Windows Phone 7 mobile OS. It is powered by a 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm processor and includes 512MB of installed RAM.
Nokia Lumia 900The Lumia 900 is adorned with a large 4.3″ AMOLED touchscreen display with a 480×800 maximum supported resolution. Of course, the Lumia 900 has all the standard features like integrated Wi-Fi, GPS support, Bluetooth functionality and AT&T mobile hotspot support.
The Nokia Lumia 900 includes additional features such as 16GB of internal storage, an 8MP rear facing camera, a 1MP front facing camera (webcam), full HD720p video recording, and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.
The biggest feature of the new Windows Phone OS is the integrated Xbox Live support, which allows users to browse the Xbox Live service and play games (with full achievement support) while on the go. With the Windows Phone 8 devices on the way, the price of the Lumia 900 is expected to drop considerably. If you can handle waiting a little longer to pick up one of the newer Windows Phone 8 devices, it might work in your favor.
    Apple iPhone 5 –
The iPhone 5 have a 4”with 16:9 screen, powered by a 1.2 to 1.5GHz A6 quad-core processor and at least 1GB of installed RAM. The predecessor to the A6 processor, the A5, included an integrated GPU so it’s likely the A6 will include a more advanced GPU which will allow the iPhone 5 to run more graphic intensive games and applications.
The iPhone 5 is also include a 4G or 4G LTE radio for use with advanced wireless speeds, and of course all the standard bells and whistles that the other iPhone devices included.
iPhone 5 is just 7.6 millimeters thin. To make that happen, Apple engineers had to think small, component by component. They created a nano-SIM card, which is 44 percent smaller than a micro-SIM. They also developed a unique cellular solution for iPhone 5. The conventional approach to building LTE into a world phone uses two chips — one for voice, one for data. On iPhone 5, both are on a single chip. The intelligent, reversible Lightning connector is 80 percent smaller than the 30-pin connector. The 8MP iSight camera has even more features — like panorama and dynamic low-light mode — yet it’s 25 percent smaller. And the new A6 chip is up to 2x faster than the A5 chip but 22 percent smaller. Even with so much inside, iPhone 5 is 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner than iPhone 4S.

Samsung Galaxy Cam hands on: Merger of Camera and Phone

  • Monday, 10 December 2012

  • Samsung Galaxy Cam hands on: Merger of Camera and Phone

    Samsung Galaxy Cam - front
Samsung Galaxy Cam, which we liked a lot more than we thought we'd ever like a point-and-shoot camera with Android and a touchscreen.

When Samsung first unveiled its Galaxy Camera The Galaxy Cam appears to be both a solid digital camera and a great touchscreen phone.

    Tape a point-and-shoot camera to a Galaxy S3

If you want to know what it’s like to use the Galaxy Cam, try taping a Galaxy S3 to a digital camera. Now, imagine these two devices actually communicated. The Galaxy Cam has a 4.8-inch screen and internal processing power and specs that nearly match Samsung’s flagship phone. Only with a 21x optical zoom built into the front and other camera requirements like a 21x zoom.

    It’s a great phone

The Galaxy Cam looks like a camera on the front, but it’s all touchscreen-operated Android joy in the back. I was pleasantly surprised how well the Android interface worked. It looks just like the Galaxy S3′s TouchWiz interface, but runs slightly smoother (my opinion), which may be due to Samsung upgrading the operating system to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), Google’s newest, slickest OS. The Cam packs a full 1.4GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor with 1GB of RAM and the 4.8-inch touchscreen is 1280 x 720 pixels and runs on a very nice “Super Clear” LCD technology. It can also connect up to 4G LTE networks. I lay out those hardware specifications not to bore you, but to illustrate that the Galaxy Cam is running on hardware that is as fast as what we’re seeing on top-of-the-line smartphones right now. As a phone (if it actually was a phone), it’s already very nice. We used several downloaded apps and poured through the menus like any other phone.

Really, the only thing a Galaxy Cam can’t do that a phone can is make calls, but it can do Skype, so if you were really hell-bent on using it as your only device, you probably could. Chatting can be accomplished with any client.

Somehow, it’s a great camera too

Open up the camera app on the Galaxy Cam or press the shutter button, and you’re now using the best camera phone… possibly ever. The Galaxy Cam has 21x optical zoom, a pop-out flash for shooting in the dark, microSD card support, an easily removable battery, and Micro HDMI and USB slots for charging. But the real impressive part was the camera app itself. I fully expected Samsung to skimp on the software, but it has developed what appears to be a pretty thorough camera app that takes good advantage of the Cam’s abilities.
If you press the big silver onscreen button when in camera mode, you can enter four modes. You can set it on Auto, Casual, Smart Pro, or Expert mode. Auto and Casual are pretty basic, as is Smart Pro mode, which has some basic settings for camera novices looking to kick it up a notch. If you want to, say, take a macro shot, a silhouette  a night shot, or an action shot, this mode lets you select between these types of environments with simple labels and pictures. Expert mode is where it’s at, though.
