England's secret practice weapon

  • Wednesday, 31 October 2012
  • PRABH KARAN SINGH

  • The haze of the unknown is perhaps the greatest weapon a bowler can brandish against a batsman. Tales abound of mystery spinners taking unaccustomed batting line ups to the cleaners; of Saqlain Mushtaq confounding clueless counties with his ‘doosra’; of teams doing their utmost to replicate alien conditions and bowling attacks in preparation for key tours.

England’s cricketers, who are in India for a revenge four-Test series, have been honing their skills against the ProBatter system – an evolution of the humble bowling machine that promises to dispel at least some of the murkiness that shrouds opposition bowlers.

    Pro Batter in action
    Pro Batter bowling simulator

The ProBatter merges the standard practice of using a contraption to chuck projectiles at high speed with an immersive cinematic experience. What happens is this: On a big screen facing the batsman is projected footage of a bowler running in to bowl. At the last point of the delivery stride – when the bowler has apparently delivered the ball – an actual leather sphere emerges from a hole in the screen imitating exactly the same delivery that the action on screen would have represented.

What the technology does is merge the images of the bowling action to the actual emission of the ball from the hole. This means that the hole in the wall is analogous to the bowlers hand and can be commanded by the attached computer to synchronise the moving pictures to the type of delivery shot out. Thus, the software can be reengineered to decide whether it is an out-swinger that will emanate from Dale Steyn’s hand, or an equally destructive in-dipper.

The same principle works for spinners as well – the type of delivery can be chosen and appended to suitable footage – and such has been the welcome accorded to the new device that Jonny Bairstow recently spent over an hour facing off against Zaheer Khan’s flickering image in the nets.

    Many advantages
The advantages that ProBatter offers are obvious. It is perhaps the only technology that allows batsmen to study a bowler’s action from front-on, at will. The kind of programming it allows for (the machine can recreate and deliver all four of R. Ashwin’s confounding variations) would be the perfect way to demystify the unknown bowler, one whose allegedly terrifying turn or pace and practical anonymity is the biggest deterrent to touring batsmen. Unless one is out in the middle and facing the music, ProBatter would provide the closest simulation of a bowler chugging in to deliver.

Bowling machines do not require breaks, but preferring them to real bowlers as a means of regular practice has its own drawbacks. It should be realized that the processes of bowling and batting are a series of interlinked events. The events begin with the delivery stride, involve a fair bit of anticipation on either part – a synchronicity of the feet, body and bat swing – and culminate with, hopefully, willow meeting leather, a perfect closure to events as if divinely ordained.

    Nothing like the real thing

But it’s not all hunky dory. After a few sessions, batsmen facing ProBatter realise instinctively that the easier approach is to watch the hole (which is stationary) rather than the bowler (who is likely to be all over the place). Since the hole doesn’t move, and since the ball comes unfailingly out of the same infernal spot, over-reliance on the ProBatter – or on any bowling device, for that matter – may foster premeditation and leaden footedness, key elements of avoidance for batsmen. As much as it is a vital part of pre-tour preparations the ProBatter should not – and cannot – replace facing a flesh and blood bowler at an old-fashioned nets session.

Philips’ Hue Mobile Controlled Smart lighting system makes light bulbs interesting

  • Tuesday, 30 October 2012
  • Amanpreet Singh

  • Philips begins selling its Hue personal wireless lighting system on Tuesday, giving users total control over how they illuminate their home.

The humble light bulb has been given a makeover by Dutch electronics company Philips with the launch on Tuesday of its Hue personal wireless lighting system.

The new energy-saving LED bulb can glow any color you like, at any brightness, and can be controlled from anywhere in the world with the help of a smartphone app. It’s currently iOS only, though an Android version should be out in the coming months.

Once you’ve screwed the special bulb into a regular light socket, you simply connect the supplied Hue bridge to your wireless home router and fire up the free app.

The manufacturer claims that the new 50 Watts LED bulbs will give property owners the chance to deter burglars by remotely turning on lights, and will also allow them to save and adjust settings so that lights come on automatically, giving the impression that somebody is at home.

A wireless transmitter inside the bulb communicates with the bridge to give you total control, with Philips suggesting some ideas on how you might want to use it, including:

    - Hue as alarm clock:
Timer options on the app allow you to gradually brighten the light in your room when you need to wake up.

    - Hue as ambience creator: Recreate the light and ambience present in any of your photos by simply by dragging a picker across the photo to the color or tone you desire. Your bulb/s will automatically adjust to match the effect you’re after.

    - Hue as security guard: Going on vacation? Turn your lights on and off remotely to make it look as if you’re in. In addition, anyone who doesn’t like coming home to a dark house can use the timer to light up the place in advance.
Forget the burglar alarm, a light bulb can come to your aid!

The app also features what Philips calls Light Recipes, special pre-sets for particular situations listed as Relax, Concentrate, Energize and Reading.

Commenting on the new system, Jeroen de Waal, head of marketing and strategy at Philips Lighting, said, “Philips Hue is a game-changer in lighting – a completely new way to experience and interact with light.”

A starter pack comprising three bulbs and the Hue bridge costs $199 goes on sale exclusively at Apple stores from Tuesday.
Extra bulbs can be purchased for $59 each. And with the bridge able to support as many as 50 bulbs, you could soon have your home pulsating with all the color and vibrancy.

The bulbs, which cost 179 pounds for a starter pack that includes broadband connection equipment and three bulbs, screw into existing sockets and manufacturers claim it uses just 20 per cent of the energy of conventional bulbs.

ICANN & Direct Going to Change way of Internet By Launching NEW Top Level Domains

  • deepak kumra

  • ICANN Along with Internet Gaint Direct I is Going to Lauch new Top Level Domain's (TLD) system called RADIX . As internet domain name traffic is increasing Day by Day and because of non confirmal domain registration ICANN is taking this step.

ICANN will launch new TLD's Like
    .bank for Banking Organizations ,
    .app for applications  developers,
.ping for internet server checking websites,
.site for normal website and organisations,
    .world for borderless websites,
and a lot and lot more..................

These TLD Will help making Domain Name Available to proper organisation with authenticated selling.

ICANN and Direct i Divided these TLD's into Mainly 6 Categories :

    Financial TLD's
    Social & Healthcare TLD's
    E-Commerce TLD's
    Business Auxiliary TLD's
    Generic TLD's
    Industry Vertical TLD's

    Financial TLD's

    .bank

This extension will create a trustworthy namespace for the Internet banking industry. The .bank extension is intended to provide the bank registrant an immediately recognized domain name that tells Internet users that they are interacting with a legitimate bank. The .bank TLD will require registrants to achieve specific verification as a bank institute from a recognized authority of national, provincial or state jurisdiction. This will create a TLD for which there is unprecedented accountability for web services launched on its domains.
Internet users will be ensured that behind every domain name and its associated services, information and content, a certified banking institution is responsible for that domain. Additionally, banking institutions will be able to easily distinguish themselves in the .bank TLD from countless others in unrestricted gTLDs posing or insinuating knowledge and capabilities in the banking profession.

    .insurance

The mission of .insurance is to represent the Insurance industry globally in its own differentiated namespace. Insurance and Risk management today make up a large global industry, one we want associating with .insurance as its online representation. The proposed TLD Registry envisions the Insurance industry using .insurance as an interactive medium to easily reach out to customers in the comfort of its own namespace.

    .loans

The .loans gTLD will provide a unique and dedicated namespace to service the global credit / lending industry. It aims to be the TLD of choice for credit companies across the world, and the single source for consumers of their products. This industry contains those elements of the finance industry that are in the business of lending, or have loan products in their portfolio of financial products / services. These may include commercial banks, credit unions, microfinance institutions, and loan companies. A specific gTLD serving as a namespace for the global lending industry will offer stronger identity through an industry-wide common identifier.

    Social & Healthcare TLD's

    .baby

This extension will provide internet users with a web location to showcase the lives of their children - where parents, family & friends can capture and share all of the important moments in their babies' lives. The purpose of the .baby TLD is to give parents the ability to put everything that they want to share and document about their children's lives, at a web URL that is meant to showcase their journey. The .baby TLD is expected to add that special element- something that parents hand down to their children as a memoir of their lives and a property owned on the web that is exclusively for their child.

    .doctor

The mission of .doctor is to provide an easily recognized, specialized and publicly trusted name space on the internet for licensed medical doctors. The .doctor extension is intended to provide the registrant an immediately recognized domain name that tells Internet users that they are interacting with a licensed medical professional. A .doctor registrant must be a licensed medical professional as recognized by each country's medical regulatory authority (ies). This extension denotes 'verified trust'.

    E-Commerce TLD's

    .shop

The .shop extension will help businesses and organizations to establish their online shops with a descriptive domain extension. Hence, JimsFurniture.shop would be the online destination for the retail outlet Jim's Furniture. Each registrant will be responsible for developing their unique shopping experience based upon their products, services and market. The goal of the .shop extension is to provide registrants a domain extension that clearly informs consumers that they can shop here.

    .store

This extension will facilitate business-to-consumer (B2C) shopping on the Internet by creating a virtual theme around a defined domain space. The .store extension is intended to provide the registrant an immediately recognized domain name that tells customers the registrant’s products or services can be purchased online. It is a TLD string with the empirical meaning of commerce that will self-select/associate registrants.

    Business TLD's

    .app

This namespace will serve as a dedicated and globally identifiable domain for all Web & Mobile applications' websites. A .app domain name will give application developers a greater choice and a larger pool of names to choose from and will give them the creative flexibility to do a lot more with their applications.

    .chat

This extension will provide the e-commerce industry with a designated and differentiated internet destination where customer queries & interactions can be handled in real time in order to improve customer experience. While many ecommerce sites today have a customer service section, they do not have a designated URL that customers can directly go to when they have questions that they need answered. A user has to drill down through the various sections on the website or click through some links before being able to talk to and interact with a representative.
With a .chat TLD, businesses will be able to setup their live support and customer service at 'businessname.chat' and customers will know exactly where to go when they want to chat with someone from that particular business.

    .city

This extension will facilitate web services creating a virtual world around a defined name space that represents a real world – your city. The .city extension is intended to provide the registrant an immediately recognized domain name that tells end-users that the registrant's products, services or information, can be found in or associated with a particular city. It is a TLD string with empirical meaning that will give registrants the opportunity for geographic identification through their registrations. Each registrant will be responsible for developing their unique value proposition based upon their products, services or information in the market defined by their .city registration.

    .deals

The .deals gTLD will give e-commerce businesses across the globe a unique web destination to house offers, deals and coupons that they’d like to showcase to their potential customers. The last few years have seen many online deal sites such as Groupon, LivingSocial etc. gain popularity, with consumer spending on deal-a-day offers expected to reach $3.9 billion by 2015. While these sites do a great job of aggregating coupons and deals across brands, as can be imagined, they have limited shelf-space and can only highlight a certain number of deals. Being dependent on these aggregator sites to showcase their offers, means businesses have to deal with high revenue shares, limited avenues and a constant fight to get the prime spot to attract enough eye-balls.
If users wanted to know about the deals on offer by a particular brand, imagine how easy it would be for them to directly go to 'Brandname.Deals' and get all the information that they wanted, without needing to go through several sites or drill down through various links and sub-pages of a site before getting the best deal.

    .press

Most businesses and organizations usually have a press section on their website that takes a back-seat to actual business details. With this extensions, companies will be able to bring forth their Press activities by pointing all of these under the url 'brandname.press'. This will make it easier for future clients and vendors/suppliers to review highlights and achievements of the company.
    Generic TLD's

    .click

.click will serve as a refreshing and exciting new namespace for the Internet users of the world. .click is for everyone - from individuals to large conglomerate businesses, from universities to entertainment houses, from bloggers to artists and everything in between. Too often today, when a potential registrant goes to a registrar's site to register a new domain name, the domain name is unavailable and the registrant is presented with a long list of permutation options that are not their preferred choice – either for the name or the TLD.
With .click, individuals, entrepreneurs, communities, entities, hobbyists, students and anyone else can get their preferred choice of name that signifies that they have a strong online identity.

    .home

The .home TLD will allow users to create an intangible 'home' for themselves on the internet. Individuals can use this extension to share their memories with relatives and close friends. Photos, videos and audio clips of important moments in their lives can be documented on a .home TLD. Professionals can also display their qualifications and experience on their respective .home domains.

    .one

This extension is a blank canvas for Internet innovation. When the .com registry gained its momentum selling names early on, the North American market and particularly the United States were the first and primary purchasers of .com names. They got first-mover advantage and many have led Internet innovation. Other generic top level domains like info, .biz, .net, .org have been introduced, but none of those names have the true global generic appeal of the .com brand. Also, each of those strings brings some characteristic that taints the string with some preconception.
.one will give everyone a second chance to acquire a domain extension that quantifies their performance and proves that they are the best at what they do!

    .online

.online aims to create a fresh, new space on the Internet that's always alive and brimming with energy, ideas and innovation. This is what '.online' will stand for and will be the TLD of choice for anyone setting up an online presence - from teenagers to business people, from schools to large enterprises, from artists to researchers and everything in between.

    .ping

The .ping Registry's mission is to serve as a refreshing and exciting new namespace for the Internet users of the world. .ping is for everyone - from individuals to large conglomerate businesses, from universities to entertainment houses, from bloggers to social networks and everything in between. 'Ping' being a generic word, a website on this TLD would not stand for anything as do the existing gTLDs; .com is for companies, .biz is for businesses, .org is for organizations and ccTLDs are for specific countries. .Ping does not categorize, identify or restrict the entity's website, nor comes with any preconception of meaning.

    .site

The mission of the .site TLD is to serve as a home on the Internet for users of the world. .site aims to be a generic TLD with no preconception of meaning whatsoever, no theme, no categorizations, no restrictions of use. .site does not restrict its scope to businesses (.biz), commercial websites (.com), or organizations (.org). Unlike country TLDs (ccTLDs), it is not associated with any country or region, .site is a truly global TLD. What you can do on .site can be limited only by your imagination, which is in fact, infinite. .site is your Home on the Internet, where you can be free, comfortable; express what you want to say or what you think, share interests, knowledge, or simply post information about your business, and interact with clients. .site says nothing; it is a blank canvas for the users to paint on.

    .space

This extension will serve as a blank canvas on the Internet, for anyone across the globe. Individuals and organizations can register a .space extension and create their unique online space. Registrants can find strings of their choice and will be allowed to register unrestricted and uncategorized domain names under this extension.

    .web

The mission of .web is first choice. Domain name first choice, once again - globally. Some registrants got their first choice of a .com name. Many did not. When the .com registry gained its momentum selling names early on, the North American market and particularly the United States were the first and primary purchasers of .com names. They got their first choice. And many global registrants who came after did not. Other generic top level domains have been introduced: .info, .biz, .net, .org – but none of those names have the true global generic appeal of the .com brand. Each of those four strings brings some characteristic that taints the string with some preconception.

    .website

This extension will provide users with an alternate solution to register their brand on a TLD that is generic and is not restricted in scope to any specific industry. .Website will let users establish an online presence that denotes that they are an intrinsic part of the internet. It will serve as an open and available-to-all namespace which will invite innovation and fresh possibilities at a global level.

    .world

The mission of the .world registry is to present a fresh new namespace that is global, borderless, expansive and open to all to make it theirs. '.world', in its original sense, when qualified, refers to a particular domain of general human, or personal experience. The 'fashion world' for instance describes the environment of the designers, fashion houses and consumers that make up the fashion industry. Individuals, artists, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, bloggers are welcome to create a .world for themselves (eg. 'Steve.world').

    Industry Vertical TLD's

    .blog

This TLD will provide a dedicated namespace to bloggers around the world. Bloggers can use their .blog extensions to house their blogs. The content and usage policies of the .blog registry will create a cleaner internet experience for writers and readers of blogs.
An increasing number of organisations also maintain an active blog allowing them to interact with their stakeholders, customers etc. These organizations can also derive value from a designated TLD at which the can host their blogs, making it easier for their audience to locate and identify their corporate blog online. This benefits the end users as they will be able to locate blogs with ease e.g.: Visitors will not have to look for 'companyname.tld/blog' or 'companynameblog.tld'; they can simply go to 'companyname.blog'.

    .host / .hosting

The goal of the .host / .hosting gTLD is to provide a unique and differentiated namespace to service the global hosting industry. It aims to be the TLD of choice for hosting companies across the world, and the single source for consumers of webhosting products / services. A specific gTLD serving as a namespace for the hosting industry will offer stronger identity through an industry-wide common identifier.

    .hotel

The objective of .hotel is to represent the global hotel industry on the Internet. We envision Hotel owners of all sizes, and from all over the world, using .hotel as a medium to easily reach out to customers. For hotels, the internet is one of the primary sources of winning business. It's time the Internet gave them their own namespace to distinguish themselves from other businesses.

    .law

The mission of .law is to provide a differentiated and distinct identity on the internet to entities associated with the legal industry. The purpose of the .law TLD is to give the legal industry a completely open space that they can use to establish themselves online and where they do not have to compete with other types of businesses that have no association with the same industry. Considering the specific connotation of the word 'law' and the clear message that it sends out, this will be of keen interest from the legal industry, giving them a space where they can build and brand their identity on the web as someone closely associated with the legal industry.

    .movie

The .movie TLD will serve the interests of the movie industry and all the entities that are associated with it. We positively believe that this extension will invite innovation and fresh possibilities at a global level by providing a greater choice to the movie industry to represent themselves online in the manner they please. To identify the website as that of a specific movie, the domain usually needs to contain the words 'the-movie', or 'the-film' trailing the actual name. This namespace will provide Registrants a higher probability of obtaining their 'movietitle.movie' and a rapid redressal system which will be built specific to the needs of movie producers.

    .music

Music is a global language, and thus, the .music TLD will be for everyone. It will cater to the needs of everyone associated with the Music industry - Musicians, Bands & Record Labels. .music will also serve everyone and everything else associated with the industry - be it organizations or venues that cater to Music entertainment. It could be songs, or an entire album released on a .music TLD. .music aims to be the perfect marriage between man's oldest passion - Music, and his latest obsession, the Internet.

    .play

.play will be the global home of Online Entertainment. This extension will offer a plethora of fresh available domain names for everyone who's on the internet and associated with Online entertainment. The purpose of .play is to cater to the world of Online Entertainment in all its forms as a first choice TLD.

What’s new in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

  • Amanpreet Singh

  • Google debuted its new Nexus devices with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The latest iteration shows where Jelly Bean really hits its stride, with new fun features as well as under-the-hood, security upgrades.

Google has released its Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and Google’s calling it “the simplest and smartest version of Android yet.”
Here’s a quick look at all the biggest new features and improvements hitting the latest Nexus devices.

    Photo sphere
This camera feature upgrade now lets you take photos in any direction for 360-degree images. You can add these photos to Google Maps as well, if you want to share them with the whole Google-maps-using-world. It sounds a little like Google wants to give Android users a fun feature that also helps them crowdsource Street View for the world. Street View, in fact, served as the inspiration for Photo Sphere.
    android photo sphere
Photo Sphere images are stored as JPEGs, and all metadata is transferable when you post them to the Web or email them.

    Gesture typing

Android 4.2 brings faster, fluid typing to users with this new typing function. It sounds sort of like Swype on steroids: You simple glide fingers over the desired letters and the keyboard will predict the rest of the word, spaces, the next word, and even entire phrases. The dictionary has also been improved.

    multi user login
Personalized logins – for tablets only

Tablet users will now have option of creating personalized login experiences. This means multiple users can share a tablet and still have a customized UI, their own apps, their own email connected, etc. Switching between different users is also simple and doesn’t require logging out each time. It sounds like a family-focused feature, and a smart one at that. A family or office tablet is a pretty common thing, whereas a shared smartphone… not so much.

    Wireless display

Now you can share multimedia content from your phone to your television wirelessly. You will, of course, need a wireless display adapter – but after that, you’re set, and can send videos or photos or whatever to your big screen.

    Notifications update

When Google first introduced us to Jelly Bean, the update to notifications was a fairly large one. They became more customizable and action-oriented, and that’s continuing with 4.2. Swiping down from the top of the screen brings up all your notifications, and from there you can immediately interact with the content. For example, if you’re late for an appointment, you can email everyone tied to that update that you’re on your way.

    Google Now

    android google now
The Google I/O conference marked the debut of Google Now, its first crack at besting Siri (a low bar, in all honesty, but a certainly a worthwhile effort). The native assistant app now gives you the day’s weather details first thing in the morning, as well as relevant transportation information depending on your location, without your having to request it. From the sounds of it, Google Now is simply getting better at predicting your needs automatically based on location, AI learning, and your search history.

A bevy of new cards organizing and displaying all this data have been added, including: Flights, hotels, restaurant reservations, events, packages (shipping), movies, concerts, stocks, breaking news, nearby attractions, and nearby photo spots.

    Security

In addition to some new flash and fun with features, this version also gets down to business with some heightened security features. Users now have the ability to control how much data apps are able to access from their smartphone, as well as VPN lockdown, which means you can keep information safe from being sent over a connection if it’s not connected to the appropriate server. And in order to fight recent malware complaints about Android, there’s an SMS confirmation feature that updates users about texts that may have been sent from their phones that they did not actually send themselves. Google Play has also instituted a native virus scanner called App Check, which will warn you before downloading an app that could be insecure.
